This couldn't be more true. And coming from someone who has worked in retail for many years, I cannot tell you the disgust that I feel when I see some of the recent commercials for black friday sales.
Having stores open at midnight on Black Friday is bad enough, but when I heard that Sears is opening at 8pm tonight, just a few short hours after everyone sits down to eat with their loved ones, enjoy their blessings in life and maybe a little football, stores will be opening and starting this retail nonsense. Why must we interrupt Thanksgiving for sales? Why can't stores start sales on Wednesday, like we did at American Eagle (I knew I loved this company) and several other stores in the mall did, take Thursday off to relax and then start the holiday shopping craze again at normal times on Friday? That way everyone can enjoy the full day of Thanksgiving. Is there sometime super appealing about leaving after Thanksgiving dinner to go freeze your butt off all night until the stores open and then run around like a crazy person to score all the good deals? I have to admit I gave in to the craziness once to hit up an outlet mall and I swore to myself NEVER again. I left right after Thanksgiving dinner around 7pm, drove an hour to the place and huddled under a blanket with my portable DVD player for the next 4 hours. And I barely bought anything to make it worth it! I mean, if you want to surf the internet from the comfort of your home and score some good deals, that I can see. But the fact that people have died on black Friday due to being trampled, well that is just disgusting. For those of you who are going out, please be courteous of one another. The savings you may get is never worth the well being of another.
